There are loads of variables why this may happen. Try resetting the router. Sometimes rebooting the router helps as well.

thanks...when I use the wifi at work everything is fine and no problem. I was annoyed because on apple forums people are saying that the wifi chip inside the phone gets hot and makes the phone turn off the wifi.

this only worked for a while. I think it's to do with the Router. I don't get problems when I'm at work but it's very annoying when I'm at home. this happens on my iPad 3 with iOS 6 as well

Ok, router it is then. Do a power cycle and see if that helps.

What's a power cycle?
