hey, this is the new and android phone from mtn south africa, for 499 rand you get 3.5inch screen, 1ghz cpu, hspa, and gps but its running ginger bread. my question is, does anybody have one? and is it possible to upgrade it to android v4 without an official upgrade? |

Nope, you really need at least a dual core CPU to run Ice Cream Sandwich.

I know that the samsung pocket 5300 is a single core processor and it is able to run android 4.2. Look at tutorials showing you how to root your android device. I don't think there are any custom roms available for the steppa just yet. It looks like a chinese phone that mtn rebranded. Quite cheap for the price but why use gingerbread on a new phone? Vodafone mini might be better.

Able to run, yes. But the a lot of apps will run slow, laggy and be pr*ne to crashes.

You wouldn't want to put Android4.0 in that thing, it has just 1GB ROM, so I guess around 500-800mb user mem? With no mass memory. In Android4.0 and up, Memory management changes, there's no installing to SD Card, all goes to Internal user memory, that means a few good apps, a game and your memory is finished, then comes the CPU which I'm guessing is a very low end Snapdragon, possibly the dated QSD8250 with Adreno200 GPU, that simply doesn't have the power to handle Android4.0 and it is a power hungry chip, built on the 45nm process, its a phone built to run Android2.3 and no higher.

the huawei y220 availible at TFG stores is the better choice. running 1ghz dual core . i rooted mine already and have full super user support. have a 32gig memory card in no lag except when you switching between apps. also runnging 2.3.6. screen qaulity is ok from all angles but the camera worst i seen on any phone since.. ever. but for R450 its alot tech for not alot of geld. no dual core comes close at this price. message me for more info
