I've had 4 or 5 cards fail on me since 2008.

You must really put a strain on those cards i have been a average user and never had one fail on me. But i have lost a thumbdrive during a normal copy. |

it's only been sdhc cards that haven't lasted well. there really shouldn't be any such thing as a strain you can put on a solid state device.

The flash memory is not exactly eternal it has its limited write cycles. It will wear out like everything else. Thankfully it takes so much time we will propably end up upgrading to greater capacity before this happens.

The outside wear out of the plastic etc depends on how many times you re-insert it. Usually Usb sticks get more wear than cards if you keep it inside a phone etc.

I have had bad MicroSDs, had a 4GB that failed in my Nokia N81 in the Symbian days, then had a 32GB that failed in my GS3 in late 2012, but the vast majority of my MicroSDs have lasted, at some point I had around 3-4 8GB MicroSDs and 2 16GBs, all of them worked flawlessly, my 1 16GB is actually plugged in to my cars audio system, the 32GB I have right now I got after the 1st one failed in 2012, its been in my S3 (S2 temporarily when I broke my S3), S4 and Note 4, and has never been a problem. I am actually tempted to get either a 64GB or 128GB MicroSD now, for the price 128GB is going for down here, I sure hope it is as reliable as my current 32GB.

I had a 64gb SDXC SanDisk class 10 card that was working really well, that's up until I flashed I flashed GPE lollipop rom at which point it became read only. apparently this is fairly common, folks have said yeah it happened to me and I had to format it or I had to get a new one so expect the unexpected I guess...

Lol, thanks for the brutal honesty mel , I guess I'll just have to take the plunge as I am fast running out of memory and see what happens. I'm thinking maybe I should go for a better known brand e.g. Samsung, instead of SanDisk. We'll see...
