A new report from the UK transport committee, a cross party group of UK MPs, has recommended banning the use of hands free mobile devices whilst driving. They say that their use is just as distracting to drivers as using a mobile without one is. So what's next? Using, looking at, or touching any number of the various electronic gizmos and devices, that often come fitted as standard, like the stereo/entertainment systems, sat-navs, etc, any interactive systems with touch screens built into the centre consoles? Talking to passengers? Passengers talking? Children? Having any passengers at all? Drivers themselves? |

After reading that back, I thought the 'cross party' would be good name for a new political party, but then realised the name would of course be just as apt for any of the current political mobs. ![]() |

These 'infotainment' systems are a joke, and that needs sorting fast. 1999 - twist knob to turn heater on. 2019 - go through three pages on a touch-screen to turn heater on... Oh but it's okay, auto braking so people don't bother paying attention anymore anyway... Wtaf is going on with motor vehicles? |

@ slwnoris - 13.08.19 - 09:27am Cars should go back to only having a wireless. I'll give you my 8-track cassette player when you pry it from my cold dead hands. ![]() |

The guy who designed the original mini made no provision for a radio, as he didn't agree with having them in cars.

@ dan27notts - 13.08.19 - 10:03am I dont see the difference between talking to someone hands free and listening to the radio Hands free you are interacting on calls, radio you are just listening. No interaction needed unless you are taking part in a phone in debate or a quiz! |

If you listen to LBC then your should be given 6 points on your licence and have to do 200 hours community work.

I have watched and listened to James O Brian on YouTube a few times. Where he demolishes Brexiteers arguments. He does it regularly too it seems.

My car has an inbuilt bluetooth hands free. If someone calls me whilst i'm driving it answers automatically and the caller comes through on the sound system. There's a little microphone built into the interior lighting unit behind the rear view mirror and voice recognition for making outgoing calls and various other things but I have that shite turned off and have never bothered with it. I swear the woman's voice it uses is the same one they have on the self service checkouts at Tesco, 'unexpected item in the bagging area'.

@ dan27notts - 13.08.19 - 10:03am I dont see the difference between talking to someone hands free and listening to the radio you don't have to think just listening to the radio, work calls especially can make you put your mind somewhere else. how bad that is I'm not sure, but it's more than listening to music. |

@ ogdenz - 13.08.19 - 03:40pm In what way? he can be pretty obnoxious when he knows he's got someone on the ropes. that doesn't mean most of his anti Europe callers were able to make any effective points. |

@ 3mel - 13.08.19 - 03:30pm you don't have to think just listening to the radio, work calls especially can make you put your mind somewhere else. how bad that is I'm not sure, but it's more than listening to music. What about the people who play their favourite songs on the car stereo and go full karaoke singing/screeching along at the top of their lungs to some blood awful racket whilst they're driving. I reckon in many ways music could be more distracting to some people than simply holding a conversation whilst driving is. One would assume the automobile companies that fit such devices to their cars, would have to at least have done some sort of research and/or risk assessment on how safe such equipment was to use before they started fitting them to their products, or been assured of it's safety by some previous research on the subject, possibly by the developers/manufacturers of such equipment, if not being produced in house by the car makers themselves. ![]() |
