I think the point of settling Mars is that the earth is fubar, or at least on the cusp of being so. If humans settled there and followed the current norms of societal progress, we'd just accelerate melting the ice caps. There's an interesting conspiracy that Hitler and a band of 's escaped to Antarctica after Berlin fell. Personally, I wouldn't mind living there with a small pod of interesting people. |

it would be a flash point of international conflict if it ever melted it's covering layers. there are international agreements, barely holding together preventing anything but scientific research. but there's oil and gas reserves their that Russia wants so everyone must want them too. I think the ground there has permafrost several miles deep in places. |
