the power supply - for your basic projects batterys will do but will run out eventually, and if you build something that draws upwards of say 500 mili amps it can become costly because they will run out quickly. What you need is a mains power supply. You can buy a 1amp or 2 amp dc plug in wall adapter that puts out 12 volt DC. To step this down to other voltages buy a 1 Amp LM317 Voltage regulator, a 5K Potentiometer and a 240 ohm resistor. Do a google search for basic LM317 power supply for the

for the circuit. This will give you a variable 0 to 12 V DC power supply and it will cost you around 20 to 30.

you can buy proper lab bench power supplys but these are expensive and not needed in the begining. When working with digital circuits you will need a 5V Supply. Use a 7805 voltage regulator in this case. The exception is with 40x x x series cmos logic chips that can run a up to 12 Volts, but standard 74lsxx series logic chips must use 5Volts.

when setting the voltage on you variable power supply leave the output unconnected at first! Now set your multimeter to volts and connect to the output of the powersupply and read the voltage while adjusting it to the voltage you require. Then connect your circuit.
