It's not uncommon for a person to change after head injuries and sometimes they are unable to change back to them old self. Has your niece been offered support in how to deal with someone with head injuries there are support groups out there. Her husband may need further counciling to come to terms with what has happened.

unfortunately it takes two to tango, if one side is not playing the game then the other has to make the difficult decision to eventually throw the towel in admit defeat and save what they have left of their sanity knowing that they tried their best. Then move on and start again with a smile ! ;)
