Is there any way I can recover data from an external hard drive that has data on it but everytime I plug it into any pc it asks to format the hard drive. Both in windows xp and windows 7. Also under windows 7 disk management its showing as RAW and not NTFS and the space as unallocated. Any software out there that can help me salvage the precious data I have on it? |

Hi, you can use this free software to test your HDD as well recover files. It may take some time though depending on your file size. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

recurva do a recovery tool that works. i used it befor to rescue a hdd for a mate. it got about 95percent of the files back which is more than some will do. you must recover to a second hdd or i guarentee you wont get anything back as the app needs to write to a fresh master boot record. if that gets corrupted by over writing it will make the filles unrecoverable without some very specific forensic softwares.

I thought recurva was just for recovering deleted files. didn't know it may work in this particular instance. I will check that out too jay.mack thanks.

if it can find a master boot record even if its been corrupted it should still be able to recover some of the data...

you may not be able to rescue the files on the origina disk. but you should be able to create recovered backups to another disk. the original disk will still need repatitioning and formating after you recover its data.

I was able to use partion master to fix my external and with everything intact, everything but one important folder which I think is hidden somehow due to the last incomplete chkdisk run I had made. My 80gb internal is the one that I'd not working. same issue as the external however it dsnt even have a drive letter assigned and when I try to do so I get failed to mount volume error. I can see all the files on it with partition master but the drive is not showing up under disk drives in explorer

UPDATE: I was able to revive and sort out the 80gb too. used partition master to turn it into a logical drive and assign a drive letter and voila all my stuff and hard drive was back. a good end to a whirlwind of a day. Thank you for all the input.
