the thing was built to be the fastest car in the world, and what they ended up with was a car slower than other brute force prototypes, and slower than better engineered, driver focused supercars with a lot less power. wow. what an achievement.

i think what is particularly scary is that ariel have announced a 500BHP version of the atom. the giant killing featherweight legend could easily go around that track quicker than a veyron. a tiny british company could build a work of genius like that is a testament to cottage motor industry. more kudos to them than the bug engineers ever deserve.

@spartan, I think ur missin total! The veyron look quite easy to drive that fast tho, compaired to the konninzeg thing! I have see a video of an old lady get in 1 and drive to the shops! I dont think lap times wer top of the list wen it was made! Or they wud of made a car have the weight wiv no aircon and radio! Has it bin timed round the nurburgring yet? Lots of long str8s for it to use its power

I do love the atom! But, again, the atom and the veyron are 2 very difrent types of car!

||
@spartan2 | 26 November 08
yeah leexr2i, you demonstrated my point. the veyron has been built for straightline speed and compromised along the way in almost every other area. whereas more driver focused dynamically engineered cars can go faster with less poke. so why are people praising the engineering so much when its clear that their goal wasnt to make the BEST car they possibly could. just the fastest.

thats why the mclaren F1 has to be admired more. gordon murray didnt set out to design the car with the fastest top speed in the world. he only actually specced it with a 550BHP engine originally! he set out tomake the BEST roadcar he possibly could. the top speed can about as a byproduct, not as a goal. the mclaren wasnt compromised by its weight because it was meant to handle from the start.

whats more for example with the F1, it was designed as a roadcar, then entered into le mans against cars built for racing, and thrashed the pants off them. could you even envisage the veyron going up against purpose built race machines on a track and beating them? its preposterous.

Humm, not quite! Wen u look at the f40, that had a compromise of comfort and luxury! String to open the doors, paint so thin u cud see the carbon under it! They compromised to make the car faster! The veyron is a luxury car! With gagets and stuff, they did not compromise comfort and luxury, but in doin so made it slower round a track! And the atom is just the utter minimum u need to make a car!

@spartan2 | 26 November 08
since when was comfort or luxury ever the top priorities whe building a supercar. building a supercar, a limo yes. a supercar? i think not...........
