Yes and the writer says and you are the tiger. So if you watch the film from that perspective that story would have been too hard to believe so the story of him and the tiger would seem more plausible. Otherwise you're lead to believe he ate the other survivers.

the hyena being the cook was representing pure evil, first he killed and the Taiwanese sailor aka the zebra soon pi himself ate the sailor then Pi's own mother which was represented by the urang-utan was killed by the cook.. then you see the tiger suddenly popping out and killing the hyena.. that perhaps was some sort of defence mechanism developed by pi to help him commit this act.. the tiger was his inner-self helping him survive, even pi said without Richard parker, he would have been dead.

So he did eat them all, when he got to the island the tiger left him, he buried it away and made up his story. Probably so he could live with his guilt. Oh dear.

hmmmm......im in two minds about it......it was visually spectacular ..... but....hmmmm..... i dont know..... i think i will read the book..... i wasnt that impressed with the storyline in the film....
