Ok, this isn't a recommendation as I haven't seen it yet, but Childhood's End starts on Pick (channel 11 Freeview) tomorrow night (Saturday) at 10:00 and continues the following two nights. The book, by Arthur C Clarke, is brilliant and I've read it a few times - they may well screw it up of course, but I'm really looking forward to it, so may be worth a look.

I watched the whole season of The Get Down. First I thought it was awful and the acting was terrible but I stuck with it. The actors began to fit into their roles and the acting got better. Set in the 70's in The Bronx at the beginning of the rise of mixing, scratching, break beats and hip hop it tells the story of a group of friends struggling through life and the horrors they have to deal with to rise above it all and make something of themselves. It's a fictional world with echoes of reality with Grandmaster Flash teaching his disciple 'grasshopper' the ways of being a DJ. The music is excellent and there are some brilliant montages to that era, it was part musical, part gangster and part melodrama. I got really into it and by the end thought it was a really good series and was actually surprised that Jaden Smith, Will's son can actually act. |
