@ tranie - 22.05.19 - 08:04am The UK goverment and especially boris argued against the EU putting up import tax on chinese steel. At the current 9 '/. duty chinese steel works out even after transportation costs to be around 35 '/. cheaper than we can make it on british soil. The USA have slapped a hefty 250 '/. import tax on chinese steel. The UK government could of saved british steel years ago they just didnt want to. Credit where its due to the EU who wanted to help but were stopped by our government. The gov want to protect profits too ...I saw a guy interviewed last night (probably a union guy ) who said that a loan was only a sticking plaster , that he'd like to see steel nationalised '' until we get back on our feet '' If nationalising saves it why would they want to go back again |

Brexit was decider on the collapse of British steel. More will likely follow as the effect of brexit starts to show. |

@ 9362 - 22.05.19 - 08:48am But if you take away the carbon tax of 100 million pounds which the eu is forcing it to pay British steel would be making money British Steel borrowed 100 million from the government in April after it got frozen out of an EU-wide carbon trading scheme due to failed Brexit negotiations. British steel wouldn't have needed 100 million if it wasn't for brexit |
