Yeah, I heard about that. There has always been squabbling over(and spying on) these sorts of undersea cables, beginning soon after they'd laid.. they layed... lain... erm, after the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable, way back in the 1850's I think it was, which ran between the west coast of Ireland and Newfoundland in Canada. I watched a video just the other day about how the US had been spying on the Russian's for years during the cold war by tapping an undersea cable, they had to sneak a sub pretty much right under the noses of the Russian Navy's Pacific fleet naval base at Vladivostock once every few months for almost 30yrs, to allow US frogmen to collect the Intel and put new tapes in the recording device that had been installed on the cable. |

That's just reminded me, didn't I hear something about serious national security infiltrations by both Chinese and Russian agents in Australia recently. I didn't catch all the details but it was something to do with the plans for the new nuclear submarines they've just agreed a deal on building and the ''Five Eyes'' not being very happy about it.

I looked it up. Nothing too serious, just something about an un-named former politician allegedly ''selling out his country'' and potentially exposing an aussie PM and/or members of his family to ''a Chinese spy network'' No biggie! |

China is setting up bases in Antarctica just under us too, South Australia being where our subs are meant to be constructed.. also where our space industry will be based. |

The interesting but in here was about Tonga having that volcanic eruption and the cables being disrupted.. imagine actually targetting these things. Forget about satellites being knocked out by solar activity.. target a few epicentres of where the cables all join up and you'd have chaos. |

I knew about the cables and how important/crucial they are to everything compared with the satellites, what I didn't know was that there is no direct cable link between China and the US, which I suppose makes perfect sense when you realise why not, just i'd never thought about it like that and just automatically presumed that there would be one. |

There was a story that made the TV news discussion shows here a few years ago(it would have been right around the time they were trying to poison Sergie Skripal with Novichok in Salisbury) about some Russian warships that had been sighted somewhere off the coast of Ireland, which mentioned there was concern about them because they had been hanging around a little too long, suspiciously close or pretty much directly above where one of the transatlantic cables is situated. They speculated they might have been trying to tap into it for espionage/spying purposes, or even sabotage it somehow, perhaps by planting explosive charges to be detonated at some point or whenever they might require.
