The British army had the SLR which was 7.62, too powerful and was killing the enemy too easy and used on the streeets of NI, if u wound someone on the battle field and they are screaming and shouting and calling for help then it takes 2 more enemy out of the battle when they try and save him, so we changed from the SLR to the L85a1 (sa80) which is 5.56 and standard round size in NATO , the general purpose machine gun GPMG is still used by us and is 7.62 used in ambushes etc when the sole purpose is to kill all the enemy.

5.56 NATO is also near enough the same as a .223. SA-80s were, and still are a good weapon. At least they have got past the 7 round jam up now thanks to the cheap propellents used. British rifle yet sent to Germany for repair.

I never had a problem with the sa80, i joined too late for the SLR, but i found as long as i used it correctly, forward assisting etc and took care of it then it was fine, my last couple of years before leaving the A2 was introduced and that was good and felt really solid to me, looked the same but the parts were all new. Heckler and Koch. |
