There is a stringent criteria 4 accepting a Hadith.The most authoritative books of Hadiths are recognized as the accurate six books,Sahih of Bukhari,Sahih of Muslim,Abu Daud,Tirmidhi,Nisai and Ibn Majah.

There is the criteria 4 rejecting a Hadith as not being credible if its against Quran or Sunnah,ascribes nonsense,against well known evidence,contains vulgar words,threatens great punishment 4 small errors,etc...

Its clear that 1st Quran and then Sunnah are the basis of Hadiths.This was recognized by all Companions(as) of the Prophet(saw),all the Muslim jurists and by all the generations of believing Muslims who followed them.
