Wikipedia, boeing and other major 50 sites which have millions of hit perday joined the strike. Google didn't participated but their homepage showed protest against the act.

Thats just the first salvo bro, definitely internet wodnt be the same in the ensuing days, but just out of curiuosity does the US control the whole d*mn www spectrum? Does any country or a particular organization have the capacity to even close the whole internet services if it wishes to?

SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) were both created by lobbyists working for large corporations like CBS, Comcast, Dolby Labs, Electronic Arts, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), National Association of Broadcasters, NBC Universal, Nintendo, News Corp, Sony Electronics, Sony Music, Sony Pictures, Disney, Universal Music Group, Viacom, and RIAA.

The legislation does not limit actions to non-US websites, but is targeted at an internet site dedicated to the theft of U.S. property, which could reasonably include YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, the Android Market, Windows Phone Marketplace, iTunes App Store or any website that has any unsourced material would be subject to being cut off from funding and search.
