The football league has proposed a new plan to introduce an extra division in the 2019-2020 season, raising the total number of english(and 2 welsh) clubs from the current 92 upto 100. The new format would see 4 divisions below the premier league, with 20 teams in each. Details of the plan are to be circulated to the 72 current football league clubs who will then vote to accept or reject the proposals in June 2017. Predictably Celtic and Rangers have expressed an interest in joining the english league if the plans go ahead.

Is this to do with money? And are they going to change the name of div one to championship 2? .... If celtic and rangers are interested they should put them in the bottom league 1st

The Football League says the move would tackle fixture congestion by reducing the need for midweek fixtures and boost the finances of its members. If the old firm want to join they should start at the very bottom of the ladder, or the Vanarama national league at the very highest.

If they want to make it easier for the smaller clubs they should have 2 level leagues for West/East or north n south. Doubt celtic could afford to stay out of Europe or premier league money for a few seasons

This is to be planned bcz of more teams taking interests to compete in top divisions.. then increasing 92 to 100 would not be enough, association should create a new 5th division of 24 teams then number will jump up to 116 from 92..otherwise format of Premiere league, Football league championship, Football league 1 n Football league 2 would be good enough..
