This is absolutley terrible news The open source comunity will have lost a very valuable asset where people can freely share code. It means Microsoft can also take the rights to anything that belongs to users that's not protected by a copyright on github. |

can't see how owning a website will suddenly give you ownership of GNU, open source or share ware code. I should think the site will carry on as before otherwise Microsoft would've bought something of value with the intention of making it valueless |

Nobody trusts Microsoft to do anything right. Lots of big developers are removing their code as we speak.

what does it matter ? Microsoft can't sell or profit from your code removing your code from github would mean you're no longer in compliant with the conditions for an open source licence. |

@ 3mel - 8.06.18 - 07:09pm what does it matter ? Microsoft can't sell or profit from your code removing your code from github would mean you're no longer in compliant with the conditions for an open source licence. They could do anything they like with anybody's code, who's to know? They could argue that publishing code on github means they own the code. This has happened before on other sites and infact in many colleges and university's do the same. Your submitted work is owned by the college/university. Many company's will claim if an employee comes up with an idea while working for the company then it belongs to them not the employee. |

''They could argue that publishing code on github means they own the code'' they could try, but you'd need to be pretty dumb to do so. open source code has no owners only credited creators. |

you wouldn't need to buy github to get stuff from it that's for sure.

It's not just the issue of copyright on peoples code it's also the fact that another good website and service has gone to the dogs and been taken over by a bunch of absolute Cx x xxs!

They will completely change the whole site and the way it functions and ruin it totally just like every software application they have ever brought out.
