An announcement was made throughout the Islamic Empire calling for volunteers to participate in this important expedition. An overwhelming number of volunteers came forth offering their services. This was done because they had not forgotten the words of Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam. He prophesised this expedition and said, ' The first army from my ummah which will advance upon the city of the Romans will be forgiven.'

Eminent Sahabah r.a like Abdullah bin Zubair r.a. Abdullah bin Abbas r.a. Husain bin Ali r.a. Abu Ayyub Ansari r.a. also participated in this expedition. Soon a massive army was prepared with Sufyan bin Auf r.a. as the commander in chief. A naval fleet also set out in the direction of Constantinople. Soon both armies reached Constantinople and surrounded the city. The city was fortified with a huge strong wall making it difficult for the Muslims to enter.

They had to carry out the offensive from the outside of the walled city but this was not very effective. During the course of this expedition many Sahabas r.a. were martyred as well. Abu Ayyub Ansari r.a. also passed away while on this expedition and was buried there. No progress was made due to the extreme cold weather and other obstacles. The offensive was finally called off and the Muslim army returned without conquering Constantinople.

The Romans were greatly relieved at this and the most important significance of this expedition was that the Romans did not provoke the Muslims after this. In the 50th yr A.H. Amir Muawiyah r.a. ordered military expeditions in the direction of North West Africa. Great progress was made. As a result of these expeditions, Tunisia, Tripoli, Talmisan and Algeria, were brought under Muslim rule.

Wa 3alaikum salam. Assalamu3alaiikum. Wa iyaki sis Aameen. Yazeed bin Muawiyah. In the 50th yr A.H, Mughira bin Shuba r.a., the governor of Kufa came to Damascus and reminded Amir Muawiyah r.a. about the turmoil and bloodshed that had occurred during and after the Khilafat of sayyidina Uthman r.a.He suggested that in order to avert such a tragedy in the future it would be best that certain steps be taken.

One such step would be to nominate the next Khalifa while Amir Muawiyah r.a. is still alive. He further suggested that the most appropriate person to be nominated would be Amir Muawiyah's son Yazeed, as his nomination would serve the interests of Islam and the Muslims best. Amir Muawiyah r.a. who until now had been actively engrossed in the running of the Islamic Empire, hardly ever gave thought to this aspect

No sooner was it mentioned to him he realized its importance and thus began instituting steps for the nomination of his son as the Khalifa after him. He too felt that Yazeed would be the most appropriate candidate and being his son, he was sure to ensure the smooth running of the Islamic Empire, which his father had so painstakingly maintained and enhanced. The issue now at hand was to campaign for Yazeed to be his successor.

Amir Muawiyah r.a. was sure that the governors of Makkah and Madinah would have no difficulty in convincing those under them about Yzeed's future Khilafat. Mughira bin Shuba was sent to campaign in Kufa and assess the reaction of the people there on this matter. They reacted positively pledging their full support to Yazeed as the next Khalifa.

When Marwaan bin Hakam, the governor of Madinah addressed the people with regard to this matter, the senior Sahabah r.a. on the one hand approved of the idea that a Khalifah be nominated, but on the other hand, fiercely opposed the nomination of Yazeed. Sayyidina Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr r.a. Sayyidina Abdullah bin Zubair r.a. and sayyidina Husain bin Ali r.a. were amongst those who rejected the nomination of Yazeed.

Amongst other reasons that they gave was the appointment of a son to the post of his father was unislamic, and many felt that the son was not a suitable candidate for this post. Not long after this, news was received that Mughira bin Shuba, the man responsible for initiating this idea passed away in Kufa. On receiving the news about his death, Ziyaad bin Abi Sufyan, the governor of Faaris and Basra was now appointed the governor of Kufa as well.

He was given extra powers to appoint as well as dismiss governors under him. During this period the Kharijites were totally subdued. By the yaer 56A.H. almost the entire Islamic Empire had pledged their allegiance to Yazeed as the next Khalifa, except for the few Sahabah who had opposed this idea from its inception. In 57 A.H Ziyad bin Abi Sufyan passed away. His death struck a severe blow to Amir Muawiyah r.a. as Ziyad had lessened his burden to a great extent.

Virtues of 7HAJJ.. On the Day of 3ARAFAH, during the Farewell Hajj, Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam, for a long time, with utmost humility, made Du3aa, begging forgiveness for his Ummah.. Allaah replied: 'I have accepted your Du3aa and granted your wish in that, whoever commits a sin against ME, him I have forgiven..

However, whoever among them commits a wrong against his fellowmen, against him shall I take revenge..' Thereafter, Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam again repeatedly begged Allaah: 'O Rabb, YOU are able to forgive even that wrong for the wrong-doer..' At that time no reply was given, but on the following morning at Muzdalifah, this Du3aa too was granted.. Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam smiled happily...

Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam was deeply engrossed in Du3aa and meditation, which was not his habit.. Then referring to this merciful act of Allaah, said: 'Allaah accepted this Du3aa of mine and on seeing this shay6taan started crying most bitterly, shouting and screaming, while throwing sand and dust over his head in self pity..'
