Bismil Laahir Ra7hmaanir Ra7heem.. The Batle of Al-A7hzaab.. Once the Sahabah Radheyal Laahu 3Anhu went to Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam complaining of debilitating hunger.. As proof, each showed him a slab of stone tied to his belly to stave off the hunger pangs.. Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alyhe Wasallam lifted his garment, and tied to his abdomen were 2 slsbas of stone..

Jaabir bin Abdullaah Radheyal Laahu 3Anhu could not bear to see Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam assailed by severe hunger.. He slaughtered a sheep and his wife ground some barley and cooked it.. He then discreetly invited Nabee Salllal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam and a few of the Sahabah for a meal.. Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam accepted the invitation and much to his surprise, he brought all thousand of them!

Everyone ate to their fill.. After that the vessel of mutton and dough that was being baked remained as they were before, without decreasing.. Similarly, the sister of Nu3man bin Basheer Radheyal Laahu 3Anhu took a handful of dates for her father and maternal uncle.. Nabee Sallal Laahu 3Alayhe Wasallam took the dates, tossing them around in his cloak and invited his Sahabah to eat.. The dates increased till they dropped over the rim of the robe.. Everyone ate to their fill..

The huge army of the idolators, which numbered as many as 10000 fighters, arrived and settled in the vicinity of Mad3nah, in Al-Asyal and Uhud..

The Quraysh were 4000 men, 300 horses and 1000 camels.. Abu Sufyan rode proudly as the commander-in-chief of the allied forces.. Their standard bearer was Uthman bin Talha Abdari.. Opening another front, Banu Ghatafan and their 6000 followers, the men of Najd, pitched camp at the end of the Naqmi valley in the foothills of Mount Uhud.. The arrival of 2 large armies so close to Madeenah posed an enormous threat to the Muslims..

Allaah mentions this mammoth military coalition in surah Al-A7hzaab (The Confederates) 'Behold! They marched upon you from above and below, and then your eyes spun around and your hearts leapt to your throats.. You began to doubt Allaah's plan, yet in this was a trial for the Believers and an immense jolt.. (33:10-11)

But Allaah Ta3aala kept the Believers firm on that occasion.. He says: 'When the Believers saw the confederate forces they said: 'This is what Allaah and His Messenger promised us, and Allaah and His Messenger have told us the truth..' And it only increased their Faith and their submission to Allaah..'

As for the hypocrites, and those weak at heart, their hearts shuddered with fear at the sight of this army.. 'And when the hypocrites and those to in whose hearts is a disease (of doubts) said; 'Allaah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusions..'

Once again, Nabee Sallal Laahu Alayhe Wasallam appointed Umm Makhtoom Radheyal Laahu Anhu caretaker of Madeenah, and sent the women and children to take shelter in forts.. 3000 Muslims with Nabee Sallal Laahu Alayhe Wasallam at their head came out to encounter the idolators, with Allaah's Promise of victory deeply established in their minds.. They established themselves at the mountain of Sila3 with the trench, a barrier between them and the disbelievers..

The pagans arrogantly advanced towards Madeenah and the Muslims.. As they approached, they caught sight of the trench and stopped in confusion.. 'A novel device, a wily ruse!' Abu Sufyaan exclaimed in amazement.. 'This trick is totally unknown to the Arabs..' Consequently, they decided to lay siege of Madeenah and began to check around the trench trying hard to find a weak spot through which they could get into Madeenah..

To deter the enemies from approaching or bridging any gap in their defences, the Muslim archers kept them at bay.. A hail of arrows showered the pagans so that they could neither leap across the trench, nor fill it with earth.. Every morning they came out and attempted to cross the trench while the Muslims guarded every inch of the border and greeted them with arrows and stones..

The Quraysh decided that a group of fighters led by Amr bin Abd Wudd, Ikramah bin Abu Jahl and Diraar bin Al-Khattab, should work their way through the trench.. They,in fact they managed to do that, and their hors*men captured a narrow ares between the trench and Mount Sila'.. Amr challenged the Muslims to a duel, and Ali bin Abi Taalib Radheyal Laahu Anhu was sent to check him..

After a short but fierce engagement, Ali Radhyal Laahu Anhu killed Amr and obliged the others to evacuate in a state of panic and confusion.. They were so disconcerted that Ikramah left his lance trying to flee, and Naufal bin Abdullah fell into the trench and was put to death by the Muslims.. At the end of the skirmish, 10 pagans were killed, and 6 Muslims martyred..

During the process of fighting, Sa3ad bin Mu3adh Radheyal Laahu Anhu was h*t by an arrow that pierced his jugular vein.. Percieving his end approaching, he invoked Allaah: 'O Allaah You know nothing is closer to my heart than striving in Your way against those people (disbelievers) who belied Your Messesnger and exiled him.. O Allah, I deeply believe that You have decreed that we should fight them

Let me stay alive in order to strive more against them.. If it has ceased, I beg You to bleed it again so that I may die in it..'His Du3a was accepted.. He concluded the Du3aa begging Allaah not to let him die, until he had full revenge on Bany Qurayzah.. After the Battle of Uhud, the Jewish tribe, Banu Quraydah had entered into a pact with Nabee Sallal Laahu Alayhe Wasallam..

But in the midst of the battle of the Trench, Huyay bin Akhtab, the chieftain of Banu Nadheer, met Ka3ab bin Asad, the chieftain of Banu Quraydah, and got him to renege on the agreement.. After some initial hesitation, Ka3ab broke the covenant and sided with the Quraysh and the pagans.. The stronghold of Banu Quraydah lay to the south of Madeenah, which was where the Muslims had their fortification, and where they had left their women and children..
