Thanks @playfan - One of the things I like about this topic is that we can all respect each others musical tastes and preferences. Now if we'd been rap fans, you'd have had to seriously consider 'popping a cap in my ass' for 'dissing' DT.. ![]() |

The culture that has evolved AROUND it is depressing and the music has changed to reflect what people want to hear, as mainstream music always does. The original rappers dropped lyrics on all kinds of subjects, and since the artists were often from minority communities, Police harassment and brutality was an integral part of waking people up to the problems via the music. whilst adopting a highly militant stance, were more about the ideal of energising and motivating the oppressed communities to fight back - it was not about random violence and carrying a gun being a good thing in and of itself. There are many 'conscious' rappers out there who don't advocate violence or diss women.

Number 8. SPACE RITUAL by HAWKWIND. 1973. ' You will feel dizzy. .you will feel the need to vomit. . .there will be bleeding from orifices. .you may be subject to fits of hysterical shouting-or laughter! '. So advises Sonic Attack, just one of the moments of high strangeness to be found on the four-side-out-of-body experience that is Space Ritual; one of the fiercest live albums of any year.

. .Emerging from the Ladbroke Grove freak scene of the '60s, Hawkwind never reneged on the hippy promise, originally the Space Ritual was their 1972 Uk tour, an elaborate affair financed by the band's unexpected hit Silver Machine. But, from the album's retina searing artwork down, this distinctly British take on the sci-fi experience was no mere concert recording. Robert Calvert, who's credited

. .for 'Poetry and Swazzle', described the concept as 'the mythology of the space age, in the way that rocket ships and interplanetary travel are a parallel with the heroic voyages of earlier times' .They may have been looking to the stars, but the likes of Master Of The Universe and Born To Go were thrillingly primal rock'n'roll. Soundtracked by Lemmy and Simon King's thunderous rhythm section

. .Nik Turner's free-jazz sax and lashings of primitive electronic improvisation, Robert Calvert's hyper-serious space oratory succeeds in making interstellar velocities, the incomprehensible vastness of time and space, and the disconnection from planet earth surprisingly palpable (listen to it in the right frame of mind and it can be an enjoyably terrifying experience). Space Ritual reached

I first heard Space Ritual when I was about 12 round a my best mates. For some reason his stereo was in the garage, and his father had spent the previous 3 hours respraying his car, without the door open... the image of two extremely pink bug-eyed little boys, completely of our faces and saying 'wow' a lot, will remain with me forever.. (along with the probable cerebral damage) :-)

@playfan the dude from the dillinger escape plan is the new drummer in CoCa, up to now atleast. And the new bass player is the guy who used to play bass in Jumblehead, Claudios pre-shabutie band! Should be very interesting. But seeing as Claudio writes all the songs in an acoustic form to start, and ive heard has alot of input on the other instruments too, i doubt there'll be a HUGE difference.
