I've sat and worked out what I was doing at what ages. At 4yo I was allowed along the path along the terrace of houses, on a green I lived on. The houses were brand new, and as work was still going on, our bit was fenced off. But I was allowed to go around the other side of the fence to be with a new school friend on the green. This meant walking around a terrace of houses, the corner of a car park, and through the alley, back out onto the green (21 Arundel Green, Aylesbury, England). Behind the terrace I lived in, which is at the end of the green, was a lane to some garages. And a field full of gypsy caravans. I used to stray over there when I was 5 and 6 years old. And also play in the corn field. I was now walking to school too - Elmhurst infant school, which you can see by Google is not only a trek for a 5yo but also I had to cross a major road as well as smaller roads. You'll also see there are no fields behind the house anymore. When the field behind the house was cleared of gypsies and turned into a building site, I was 6-7 years old. And then I used to play on the building site, jumping off huge earthmover dumper trucks onto piles of sand. These are my fondest memories of childhood. I loved playing in that area, and all the things we got up to. Those days made me. I can't imagine how I'd have ended up if my dad had kept me indoors or in the back garden the whole time. That would've been tragic, and probably damaging. When I was 8yo I moved house. |

@ newt182 - 11.11.14 - 04:23pm They are never removed from your record even when spent (I think you can ask for them to be when you reach 100), no matter what offence. A standard DBS check will show everything, cautions and convictions, on your record. A standard check can be obtained for someone applying for a job that involves vulnerable people, working in finance and some other types of work. Everything shows up when travelling abroad and you might be put back on a plane and refused entry in countries like the US and Australia. Thanks newt |

That's something to consider when you have kids isn't it? No nipping to the shop cos you forgot something, if there's an emergency and they're in bed you have to get them up and take them with you etc etc. They're a huge responsibility, and if you aren't interested in that kinda commitment then don't have kids.

@ 9362 - 11.11.14 - 02:42pm who left her 6yr old son home alone for 45 minutes be allowed to have the caution she recieved overturned as she says it harms her career prospects? when I grew up, times were of such nature that I had to be left home alone more than once, even when I was six. the worse thing that happened to me was boredom and breaking my parents stuff. I don't consider my parents irresponsible for that, nor that woman. of course that a child doesent know much but she didn't committed a crime. |

With all due respect, I can't see any time it's acceptable to leave a 6 year old. Just my opinion- it's far too young.

@ eyesore - 11.11.14 - 04:15pm I think at six or even four it's safe for a child to play in the back garden unsupervised. Of course out the front is different. It depends on the type of area u live in You could live in the 'poshiest' area doesn't mean it's safe. |
