actually ableton is a lot more flexable than reason or fl studios. you can use it for straight productions, recording live, performing live, and for djing. reason is purely for production, and fl studio doesnt have as much functionality as ableton. you can also use the rewire function on Live to link in reason or other programs to give you even more choice

offline production? well all these DAWs will work without the internet so they are offline anyway. but if you want to record without a DAW then youll need either a multi-tracker or a mixing console running into a recorder

ive never really used linux so not got much experience with programs like ardour or lmms

its really down to personal preference, i used cubase years ago, but moved over to ableton and found that suits me better. even fl studio has its merits and you can get some professional results out of it(Deadmau5 for example). Vsts only work with windows (as far as i know) macs have a similar format (Au) that quite often comes with the vst installer. you coukd possible get them working using a

virtual windows machine inside linux, then link midi between the 2OS's but that could be hard work! lol. dont know why there arent linux versions of some of the big synths, especially as mac osx us a r*tard cousin of linux!
