Feb 4 is World Cancer Day, raising awareness of cancer for everyone because cancer knows no barriers and doesn't discriminate, it affects everyone directly or indirectly. In the UK it's expected that soon one in every two people will get cancer. On twitter the hashtags WeWillUnite and WorldCancerDay will give you more info. Get yourselves checked out for any symptoms of cancer and don't die of embarrassment. |

@ mz.c - 4.02.15 - 09:13am That's what they were saying on tv this morning phal 1 in 2. Shocking. Dayum, I wonder if they're factoring in the aged living longer and ultimately succumbing to cancer due to age, when they would have died from some other disease in the past before ever getting cancer. |

I just wonder if cancer really is a disease and not a lifestyle, mz.c

I'm doing ok thanks Phall and you're spot on, an aging population means more people are likely to get one cancer or another.

my uncle contracted bowl cancer and gassed himself in the car before the cancer killed him. sad day. it was like he wanted to beat it first. the whole immediate family had to be tested, thank goodness we all came up clear

@ convictor - 4.02.15 - 09:20am I just wonder if cancer really is a disease and not a lifestyle, mz.c Cancer is about 200 different diseases and I can assure you this isn't a lifestyle I'd choose. My cancer is random and affects one in eight men. |

I believe its more a lifestyle. refined foods, toxic chemicals in our bodies, pollution, smoking etc. perhaps not every case, but most. Should we say, a disease caused by a lifestyle?

@ redvixen - 4.02.15 - 09:24am my uncle contracted bowl cancer and gassed himself in the car before the cancer killed him. sad day. it was like he wanted to beat it first. the whole immediate family had to be tested, thank goodness we all came up clear I'm sorry to hear that Vix, it's a terrible disease and some of the treatments have terrible side effects meaning patients can often refuse treatment and pick other options like your uncle. |

@ convictor - 4.02.15 - 09:29am I believe its more a lifestyle. refined foods, toxic chemicals in our bodies, pollution, smoking etc. perhaps not every case, but most. Should we say, a disease caused by a lifestyle? Nothing is being missed in research for the causes of cancer but current thinking is that it could mostly be genetic rather than lifestyle. |

@ redvixen - 4.02.15 - 09:27am Me too ![]() Thanks Vix, I'm very lucky, my treatment has been superb and I've got everything a truly world class hospital can provide. That's at The Christie here in Manchester where the staff have been fantastic. |

from the little I understand about cancer and in really juvenile terms, we all have 'cancer' cells in our bodies and all they need is something to trigger them off, like a cr*p diet, aka lifestyle, and then they go haywire. Certain preservatives and artificial flavourants, have been proven to cause cancer. That's hardly genetic.

nor is throat, larynx, or lung cancer genetic. its caused by smoking, mostly. some people may get it while other's don't. That just means some people are more susceptible to those carcinogens.
