Not really,you wouldn't choose an iPhone 3GS over a iPhone 5 would you?...and when the 6 gets released your better off going for it over the 5S.Plus there's the new player on the scene the C series.

Well, simply put, the S versions are generally upgrades over the original version, so it depends on your preference. There's no rule as such.
