What's the best over ear headphones to buy for around hundred quid or less? I was looking at akg k551 but the bit on the end is thick and wouldn't fit on phone with cases (how thick is the company for doing that ? ) ![]() |

Well I obviously don't have much to do with the sub-100 pound market, said garion loftily - sniff, sniff ![]() For some reason Sennheiser have toned down their budget models in the last few years (sub-40 quid) possibly for European tastes, and they've lost 'attack', but around the 100 pound mark they'd still be the brand of choice for me. It's worth looking at models that cost up to 150 quid, then run off to Mr Richer who'll sort you out for a ton. It's worth bearing in mind that when a manufacturer brings out a new model (often for completely cosmetic reasons) the old stock of the virtually identical headphone will become obsolete and unsaleable from their perspective, so you can pick up last years model (same as this years model but lacking the 'Special Edition' graphic on the headband) for half the price from Richers. |

On another subject Hoovers are going down in price due to eu laws on wattage - I got one in Sainsburys that was 160 quid (bulls**t recommended retail price) down to 47 quid - 2200 watts of fk you EU power lol

Sorry for the late response - they're Sennheiser HDR180 cordless (radio frequency) and now I can't imagine using anything else. Although they don't sound quite as good as my old (wired) HD580's which eventually broke down, they really score on ease of use. As you can see below, they sit on the charging unit which I've got tucked behind my tv (no line-of-sight needed like the old IR cordless jobs) although the unit itself is not unattractive and could be out in the open. They connect to the 'tape out' sockets on your amp (the other wires you can see are HDMI and SCART cables to my tv) and when I want 'em I just lift them off and put them on my head - sorted. I'm a terrible one for stepping on headphone cables (or ripping them out dancing) so for me they're ideal - light too, with only one AAA battery in each. |

They look marginally strange on your head, as can be seen in this Pro Gallery Pic but I'm already marginally strange, so they match. ![]() |

It should be noted that the post about my headphones is purely in answer to the question about what I use, as these are not 'portable' headphones as they need to be within range of the transmitter/charging unit, and hence are only for home use. 'Within range' has changed dramatically since the days of infra-red cordless cans though; with those you had to sit in the 'sweet spot' and if you turned your head this way or that the sound would hiss and fade, with this Kleer technology I can go into the bathroom, bedroom, even the garden, with no loss of sound quality. Got 'em on (above) to watch Lord of the Rings, and look - nothing between the tv and clumsy garion to step on, and as you can see, the transmitter (which looks massive in the earlier pic) can't be seen even behind my tiny tv. |

I would personally recommend audio technica m50. I use it for gaming mostly, it is quite comfortable, great bass, excellent mids and a little too sharp treble. It cost around US150 though and only need around 500-600hrs of use for the burn in.

It cost around US150 though and only need around 500-600hrs of use for the burn in. That's an excellent point about running in, just like speakers, most headphones will sound over-bright and 'sharp' out of the box with little subtlety. The time required varies by model - mine took around 200 hours. |
