I heard on the news this morning, that scientists have grown strips of beef, cultured from stem cells of cattle, and have put together the worlds first test tube burger. Would you, could you eat this? |

No because I only eat beef that comes from British farms.

of course, it may not actually make me sick like real beef

This sort of practice will put farmers out of work.

@ dodgey - 5.08.13 - 12:33pm This sort of practice will put farmers out of work. I dont think the idea is to put farmers out of business, but to provide a meat source to meet the ever increasing demand, that's coming from places like china etc. |

i don't like it at all tbh.. and i don't think it will put farmers out of business, it may be more expensive i think.

at a cost of 220.000 quid making one burgers worth, I don't think any farmers need worry just yet

If they improve the technology it will become cheaper over time. Price will be the determining factor in whether people eat it or not. Why pay for the costs of an expensive farm, wages, animal feed etc when it can be done for so much cheaper on a per unit basis.

cow farming for beef is responsible for a large chunk of green house gas emissions. if they can do it cheaper, with no side effects and a lower carbon footprint why not... it would certainly be more humane.

@ tokage - 5.08.13 - 12:56pm i think i ewould rather pay more for normal meat. People of today aren't really the target market though, it's people who haven't even been born yet who will be the consumers of this product. Our great grandchildren will be looking at us as the weird ones for being old fashioned and still eating farm bred animals. |

yes, no side effects... then in 50 years time they find one or 60.. let em cows fart for all they're worth, i still prefer them.

Especially when the price of our old fashioned burgers will be equivalent to buying a new TV or something.
