Fraud investigators have been called in after 15 members of the same family received public aid worth up to 1m and at least three new homes by claiming they lived in a single flat destroyed by the Grenfell Tower fire.

One of Britains most notorious crash-for-cash fraudsters, Masi Naqshbandi, is among the relatives rehoused in new properties, including flats in a luxury development in Kensington, west London, furnished by John Lewis.

A woman who said she lost her home and husband in the Grenfell Tower fire has been jailed for four and a half years.

Joyce Msokeri, 47, filled a room at Kensington's Hilton hotel with donations after saying she was a grief-stricken victim of the disaster, which killed 71 people.

Southwark Crown Court heard data showed her phone had never been used near the Grenfell site.

Last month, Msokeri was found guilty of fraud and possessing a false document .

Sentencing her, Judge Michael Grieve QC said her offences were callous and contemptible, indeed disgusting.

A 52-year-old con man with 28 convictions pleaded guilty to fraud on Thursday for having tried to collect 12,500 pounds, or about 16,000, in financial assistance by falsely claiming that his family had died in the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

Anh Nhu Nguyen, a Vietnamese man who lives in southeastern London, posed as a survivor for at least two weeks after the fire on June 14 that killed at least 80 people. He said that his wife and son had perished in the blaze and that he had lost all of his worldly possessions.

After registering at a relief center for disaster victims in June, Mr. Nguyen was given free accommodation worth more than 3,000 at a nearby Holiday Inn as well as food, electrical goods and money from various charity funds.

A year ago, I was sat here googling for info, and i will never forget that video. It's like I watched it yesterday.

She was middle eastern, and i think in the second from top floor. She streamed her mobile phone video.

She was a bit panicky but talked us through, and showed the fire engines far down below. She said how she had been told to stay in the flat. It looked like a nice flat.

Someone opened the door again and she said it had to stay closed this time because the hall was getting too smoky. She had a neighbour in the flat, and i think young children. She was twenty-something.

I watched this like an hour after she'd sent it. By now, most of the top flats were furnaces. It was crippling to know she burst into flames when the heat caught up with her.. it's still harrowing as fk.
