When you're out and about and have booked a hotel room, do you feel safer with the 'smart cards' that are used nowadays or the traditional 'key'? I'm somewhat on the boundary with this. I know that the card is more convenient but, What if someone hacks into the system and has access into your room??  |

Prefer hotel key cards. They are just as secure as a traditional lock. Btw, people can pick a traditional lock also so... Convenience works for me lol

Prefer self check-in and smart cards. Premier Inn are by far the best hotels for business use.

@ 3mel - 7.09.19 - 07:38pm if it's a magnetic strip swipe it's safer than the ones you touch, think they can be read by someone in a cramped lift for example. they make RFID blocking wallets now I've used the magnetic swipe cards, and think they're pretty secure and convenient. I like technology! The more localized the key, the safer it is. If it's not connected to the internet, it's safer because it would have it's own localized encryption. |

you can set up a RFID key system on a raspberry pi, the key fobs are about 3 quid each. Takes about 20 seconds to encrypt each fob.

Cards, if I stay somewhere with a key I always leave it with reception if I go out.

You can use your phone as a virtual key at some hotels, i've not stayed at one but think i've used all the other types that have been mentioned, including places with the gigantic keyrings
