Yep, got stranded on Sant Antoni de Portmany on the west side of Ibitha Island in the Balearic. Could not find my excursion bus. They forgot about me ![]() Had a passport Visa debit card, loaded in Euros but was empty then. I did though experience the Island in a much more filling experience. The people are really beautiful and compassionate. My sort of retirement if I ever do so. In fact Spain is the most beautiful and most suitable of the European lot: The weather is good, the atmosphere sublime, not to poor but above average.. |

Got scammed by souk traders in Tunisia once. (I hate that place!) Moral of story do not stray from excursion group doing your own thing! I got a wooden chess board set, local hookah pipe set, some 'hand of Fatima' necklace, a small ornamental bird cage, a cigarette souvenir after a selfie with the traders.. They made me pay more through the card machine which had ripples later on. |

Sorry to hear that clievy. He didn't have holiday insurance? I stepped off the train at Cambridge and it left without me. As luck would have it, the flying Dutchman was stopped for an emergency so the coachman got me on it. Was in kings cross in like an hour. ![]() |

having no warnings on the beach after multiple deaths makes it sound as though they know there's a problem but they don't want it to impact on the revenue of their tourism industry. sorry for your loss. |

Sorry to hear that. Nothing as bad as that. Once came back from a holiday to find that my car had been stolen from the 'secure' private car park i'd left it in near Leeds/Bradford airport. |

They're really strict with the beaches here in SA though. YOU CAN ONLY SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS where the lifeguards sit and watch. Also can't stray too deep. Also can't swim after about 5pm at all. Think the police can arrest you or give a warning if you do your own thing. Once was approached by the police at a beach in the 'South Coast, i.e. South of Durban, KZN' because they said nobody can swim at all, even right on the shore because of 'the murky waters from the rains bringing sediment from the rivers' The sharks are the obvious reason: yes the rugby team, not! SA, Australia and California are the most dangerous shark locations. *Jaws music plays in the background* But I do not care, best way to exit the world. You do not go to hell.. And if you do manage to survive, people actually look up to you and you become somewhat of a celebrity ![]() |

In Thailand I was walking along a beach road, saw all police and ambulances around, 2 guys dead on the road with their heads smashed open, they were both on a motorbike and drunk without helmets, came off and smashed their heads on the pavement, less than an hour after the accident it was all swept up, bodies taken, blood and brains washed away and everything carried on as normal.

No. I've reduced the risk by going abroad only a handful of times. In Germany we had to check the car for bombs every time we wanted to travel in it ![]() In a very small town in Austria i spent the week alone, as i was there for business but came down with an illness on the first day. No doctor, no food arranged, i just had to persevere with corner shops to get painkillers, beer that wasn't horrible, and something edible - none of which came easy, and nobody spoke much English. |

Would love visiting Austria, Switzerland and Germany.. I'll fake-claim Middle-High German ancestry even though I'm probably of the (old) Dutch origin. |

years ago i used to belong to a sea fishing club. We would travel to various seaside towns and either hire a boat, and go deep sea fishing or we would fish from the shore. We went to a place called silverside up past morcomb one day. We had to walk about half a mile across the sand and mud to get to the water. After about 2 hours a claxon blew. A group of anglers just down the beach grabbed their stuff and started running back to shore. They were shouting at us to get off the sand pretty darn quick. We grabbed our stuff and legged it as fast we could to safety. The tide came in like a tidal wave, it was fast as fk. There were trees and stuff floating in it.
