It largely depends on the pot but as a general rule you don't want them to be too finely ground. I prefer a cafetiere/French press.

I got tired of the french press thing long ago. My moka pot has perforated metalic disc filters similar to what you see with some styles of french presses, so I guess I was right in using the same grind size.

Roasting and grinding your own beans is such a faff but if you must, I suggest you try this and then try to replicate it as closely as possible.

I grind my own beans but I leave the roasting to the professionals. I tried it once and it smelled like burning tires. Thank goodness that was outdoors in a dutch oven or that may have put me off coffee for quite a while.

No, the mohawk haircut you have seen in drawings and paintings is all wrong, instead of a big long strip of hair down the middle it was actually a strip shaved bald down the middle.
The Cherokee and Creek wore something similar to what is traditionally called a mohawk but is much wider and shorter in what is now called the whitewall haircut. But it was only worn by the warriors.
