Do they ever get better? I've had a rescue dog for almost a month. He has been getting progressively more aggressive since week 2. Tonight he was cuddling up to me and I was stroking him slowly. I told him to get off the couch cos it was bedtime and he attacked me. I have bite marks on my arm and fingers. Brusies on both. And my shoulder damaged too. Do rescue dogs ever change? How many wounds should I endear? He can be really sweet but he just flips. What would you do? |

Sounds like a traumatized puppy. I knew some cats that were in defense mode all the time and any sudden moves close to them lead to hissing, scratching etc. Previous owner's kid had mistreated them, pulling tails and so on...

Who knows what hes has to go through in his time so far? Dogs take a lot of building up trust if they have been abused in the past. You have only had him a short time so far its going to take a little longer for him to fully trust you. Speak with your vet and maybe speak to a dog behavioural expert who may be able to give you more guidance on this. Good luck. You might find after time he will be an amazing dog.

Get it put down, if it bites the hand that feeds it, it will carry on biting you.

Get a stun gun. I made my own. I've never been able to test it, cos it's like a million volts, but it'll do the job if a dog wants to skin me. ![]() |

Get rid of it. That's not appropriate at all.

get the dogs history from the rescue center, they should at least know where it was before they had it. the staff there should know it's temperament pretty well too. |

a dog, a shelter dog doesn't settle in and feel safe and at home in such a short space of time.. something you did must have triggered him, you need to find out what and why, try find out more about his life before you, it is a worry to have a dog with aggression, if you are up to it, go to a training school etc with him, maybe he was teased and abused so he's still not very trusting yet. it takes quite sometime before he'll feel safe and trust you... speak to the shelter, vet and a dog school.

That is something that can take months or years to deal with. The average dog about as intelligent as a three year old human and mental illness is not easy to deal with. The main thing is to learn what triggers the dog. What it sounds like you are dealing with is isolation syndrome. Dogs are pack animals and need social comfort. |

I'd add to this keep your hands away from him and avoid sudden movements. give up on petting him at all or going to him for any affection. leave it with him to come to you when he's ready. |

Sorry you got hurt... It's gonna take months and months to gain his trust, poor thing. Try to think back how exactly you spoke to him, like tone and volume, or if you touched him anywhere while getting up. And yes, like everyone else said, vet and behaviour specialists. Good luck. Give us an update some time if you can.

This dog went to stay with a new foster mum a few days later. He was ok at first and then attacked her 3 days in a row. Just when he felt like it. He came back to me a few days later and was a perfect angel that tried to snuggle into my face. I stopped him from fear. I know he knows he did wrong, but he's with his first family again and adjusted to being top dog again. We miss him terribly |
