Wait until athletes start falling ill after taking part in the various aquatic events that are scheduled to be held in or on the River Seine. Despite having spent 1.5 billion euros on improvements to the Paris sewerage system(which regularly overflows and discharges raw sewage directly into the river) in preparation for the Olympics, independent water testing done 3 weeks ago revealed e-coli and other harmful disease causing bacteria at over 100x above safe levels. Yesterday however, organisers said it now tests within safe limits and a politician went for a swim in an attempt to calm the fears of people and athletes that have raised concerns about water quality. They wanted so badly to be able to show off Paris and use it's famous landmarks as a spectacular televisual backdrop to the games, that they decided to allow the river to be used for multiple events, despite it having been illegal to swim in it for over 100yrs due to the public health risks associated with doing so. |
