So do we mel, unfortunately. There are 'Avian Flu Exclusion Zones' all over the place up here in Yorkshire, I drive past the signs they put out on the roads all the time, there's one about 4-5 miles up the road from here at the moment and there was another one not too far away just before xmas. If an outbreak is detected on a poultry farm then a 3-10 square km exclusion zone is placed around the farm, meaning all poultry in the area must be kept indoors to prevent contact with wild birds and that all transportation of poultry into or out of the area is not allowed.

The bird flu scare is here on the east coast.. our biosecurity department obviously gave up years ago. We used to have actual self interest in protecting our industry, now they just don't care.

We used to have actual self interest in protecting our industry, now they just don't care. What exactly do you think your biosecurity department could or should have been able to do to stop it spreading to Australia? Presumably some sort of migratory bird species brought it in with them, so do you think they should have been able to shoot down every single bird flying into Australia from overseas, or erected an impossibly large bird net covering the entire country to stop them/it from getting in? |

I'm getting conflicting information here, because I looked it up and apparently we are the only place free from it. But there were some cases in January? Regardless, I think there is a rush to buy eggs here.. mostly because people are fu*king stupid and think we have to emulate everything we see Americans do. Oh wait, that's H5.. this new one is H7. |

I was at work before, but I just searched this in more detail: ''Australia has historically been protected from highly pathogenic avian flu because it's spread by migrating ducks, geese and swans (known as waterfowl) from Asia. Their flyways bypass Australia. However, with a range of different wild birds now infected by H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, including in Antarctica, there may be new bird migration routes by which the virus could enter Australia.'' Historically, we have been safe. And biosecurity measures did help to prevent it from entering the country via diseased animals/livestock. The only human to have it here was a 2 year old girl who was in India at the time of infection, she then recovered here. |
