A man that was very loved by the ppl passed away this week aged 82. He is a Legend for our country but his wish after death was to be incinerated not burried. The church (Orthodox) denied his right to a christian ceremony. I am very upset abt it. He deserved a ceremony like every other man who lived right and it seems like nothing matters to the religious zaelots. |

@mab21 | 6 January 13 |
yup. They didn't allow any priest to go at his cremation to sing a Hallelujah. They said incineration is no a christian practice and it's like suicidal. ![]() |

There are more cremations over here then people being buried due to lack of space in our church gardens, some graves go back to the 18/19th century so unless we start layering, which isnt good, families have a cremation with full church service, they can then buy a small plot of ground so the ashes can be put there, or have their loved ones ashes scattered in the garden of remembrance. The gardens at these places are well kept and a lovely peaceful place to visit. The crem' is for all religions

he was orthodox, dunno how much he practise it but the church u belong to is meant to burry u. if one person commits suicide they are not having a ceremony, but if the family asks for one they sing a few blessings. But they were totaly against when it came to this man.

Im sure a diffrent denomination wudve stepped in if asked,wudnt they? If he was devout why were his wishes so out of line with theirs? N i dont think that religious groups shud be under obligation to take part in things theyre not comfy with,as a general rule.Im sorry,tho.Thankfully i dont suppose it makes much diffrence to ur after life.God wudnt be stupid enuf to leave us at eachother's mercy surely

it would have been ok if his wish was to be burried not incinerated. He was a normal man not a monk, he was a movie maker and a positive life model for the youth thru his way of life and ambition. I think he deserved a ceremony. He was born and raised in the orthodox church and it would have been awkward to have ceremony from other churh lol.

Your soul has already left your body and gone to heaven when you die so it doesnt matter whether you want to be buried or cremated cos you are watching over your family. Each religion has their own set of rules and its members have to abide by this. I therefore understand why this mans faith turned their back on him, he would have known they would as its not their way.

It's a bit of a reminder that if we or our families have very specific requirements the time to find out wat will or wont be allowed is while we're still alive,really.If it mattered very much that he involved the church he cud have rethought wat he wanted doing,or prepared his family better

When your cremated in the uk, the service is held in the chapel of rest and not a church. The priest, vicar etc frm your faith would do the service though, but we have many religions in the uk and everyone has different rules.

I agree iilmadme, your last wishes to a family member are not enough, if you write what you want in your 'will' people have to abide by your wishes as its a legal document regardless what faith you follow.

@ kristy59 - 6.01.13 - 01:14pm When your cremated in the uk, the service is held in the chapel of rest and not a church. The priest, vicar etc frm your faith would do the service though, but we have many religions in the uk and everyone has different rules. We go to church first then crem with minister here. Few churches in glasgow have their own funeral/crem bit at the back of the church. |
