So Nokia announced that there will be no Symbian4,instead the current S3 phones will get the updates bit by bit, apparently this could be Nokia's strategy to close down Symbian as a dev platform, The Registrar has a couple of articles on what been going on here: http://is.gd/gddpe and here: http://is.gd/gddKb apparently there are sum Nokia Reps in the comments section to,havent checkd that yet. |

It is nothing to do with number 4. Nokia are doing away with the symbian naming version so dont listen to scaremongering about symbian dying et al. They are finally going the way of other os so you are able to update your phone without having to buy a new handset.

However, as per other brands there will be limits in what one os can achieve on each phone as obviously newer handsets will have better hardware facilities that some parts of os will or can take advantage of.

doenst look good for symbian. :( i dont want to start any fight here now, but i think even the hardc*re symbian lovers will get the message now about symbian. i think if nokia make meego user and numpty friendly like android is, then there are good chances to come back in the smartphone business

I can't believe how every announcement gets turned into a negative announcement by Nokia haters. ![]() |

This is a historic announcement that will enhance the life of Symbian handsets to a great degree. Nokia will no longer number their OS versions. Instead they will follow a Continuous Improvement approach, which means all Symbian handsets will continue to get updates till the time its technically feasible.

In simple words, if you buy an N8 today, it will get all updates that could've been named as Symbian4. N8 will get the Qt UI when it comes out. So by the time phones like Desire HD become obsolete, N8 will be getting a new Qt based UI and will continue to get all updates.

Nokia has also decided to focus on Qt as their sole development platform, this means all apps created in the future will run on all handsets that have Qt, be it Symbian, Meego and maybe s40 as well. The underlying OS will be irrelavant.

If you read your tech artciles from a little unbiased blog like arstechnica, you'd find that developers are pretty big on developing for Qt. because it will be easier for them to write once and run everywhere. Qt will run on Nokia phones, Windows, Ubuntu and some are even trying to port it to Android.

The Register are not biased, but i guess any site that says sumthn you dnt like is biased, i dnt see anything negative being said about Qt at The Register, the articles are mainly about Symbian and Nokia's strategy to liten and be more effecient.

@bobby i dont think what you say is possible. first because we all know that after some time the n8 will come to its hardware limits.its not a machine that it can run whatever software comes out for the next 5 years. and second if all updates came like you say then nokia can close its phone department. we need only the n8 and not any new device. and im NOT a nokia hater. i would love if the n8....
