random access memory means ram adding more ram hlps give the computer better performance meaning it doesnt have to use the hard drive has ram witch is slower ram is the cheapest hardware for a computer so they say

@nfx almost correct except windows use swop file aka virtual memory where is will write to disk rather than store it in ram. With XP it will write to disk everytime you aces your system files and you need to set it to keep win core services in ram aswell as use ram rather than swop. More ram dont make your pc boot faster but it will make that win go less to disk
