also the other day my mobile broadband broke so had to ring my network to un install my modem but since that day some programs have vanished and left a big space inbetween the icons on the start screen.. usually it would clear the gap and put them all next to each other?

Java script should be in browser settings.

depends on the browser your using as to where the java is kept. as for the missing programs. you may have just gotten ridd of there icons. check c:program files ((x86) if you have 64 bit o.s) and see if the program is actualy still in its folder. if so just create a new incon for it and place it on the desktop or in the start bar

adobe flash is free so if you need to its a simple enough install. if it comes up with already installed it means some how it has been dissabled. simply look of the setting to reenable it in yer tools/internet options in ie7 or tools/manage addons in ie8. if your using another browser then look in preffs.

if you can find it then go to control pannel programs and features, just uninstall it and reinstall it and it should be setup back to defaults.

be carful of java enabled sites a lot use malitius scripting to plant trojans. use firefox and get an addon called noscript. this will give you some control over the scripts you allow as it will block all till you say.

your icon sorting wasn't set automatic. java and javascript are two different things. browsers support javascript/ecmascript while java requires the separate runtime. personally i don't recommend using java and javascript use should be limited/filtered to trusted domains.
