my mates dads pc doesnt wanna work. when it turns on there are no icons, no start menu or bar, except it automatically opens in my documents? i am able to access the Control panel etc but i have no idea what the prob is or what to do about it? any info is appreciated |

insert windows disk in cd rom. press ctrl-alt-del. taskmanager should pop up. choos run. then type sfc /purgecache then sfc /scannow

It sounds like somebody hid the icons and engaged the active desktop . Does right click work ?

Haha guys, guess what. went back today and had another look! pc had no antivirus protection, only windows firewall (which is laughable). anyway i installed kaspersky and ran a full scan - 43 virus and trojans detected. i deleted them and then ran the windows setup disk and chose repair which informed that the pc had several serious errors detected and would i like to repair? i said yep and bobs

your uncle, back to normal! i then ran auslogics which informed me i had 21000 problems - all now fixed! so thanks guys for your replies and help and if i ever see any of u in real life ill buy u a pint out of the 20 i was given for sorting it ;)

All those malware and trojans  . Tell him to set up a normal user account for regular use . Doing everything from an admin account causes problems like that . I shall say nothing about p2p , bit torrent and p*rn .

lol marson normally id agree but the poor guy is nearly 70. he has no idea about P2P etc. i was concerned that he might have used online banking, shopping etc and he was like noo i dont trust those banks. he has a post office account and hasnt used a atm since the 1980's

Oops , then it was probaly driveby downloads , email attachments and pfishing scams . Was he using IE6 too ?
