I saw in a pc magazine that the router your ISP provides is usually the most basic and it recommended to buy a router because it claimed by doing this it will improve your connection speed even on the G And B Standards. I bought a belkin N Router which is backwards compatable with G And B Like they all are anyway. |

It had a great review claiming wireless speeds to be excellant. Although its said it was a pity it didnt have gigabyte ethernet but what is that? Would my present modem have had that and if I Havnt got that will it slow my downloads down?

Most people will only ever need the functions that come with the router the ISP gives you. Can you name something that you use that wasn't supported by the ISP router? First time I have heard about the connection speed too. The signal strength should be limited by legal standards depending on which country you live in, no?

(ive never bought a router before so iam assuming the 3 ive been issued with by ISPs in the past probably werent gigabyte ethernet anyway? Although my previous router was a netgear which ive still got and I Understand they are good. My present router is a thompson which 02 sent me F0C With my broadband deal.)

Thanks I will take a look at that site. I havnt opened the box on the new router yet cos iam just wandering if I Should have gigabyte ethernet and what percentage of new routers support that feature.

its 1000 gigabits. Divide that number by 8 and that will be the speed in gigabytes. So that means you will get 125MBps transfer speeds using a 1000Gb connection.

doh... 1000 = 1 gigabit or 1000 megabits. Dividing the number by 8 will give you the speed in megabytes.

So gigabyte ethernet ports offer faster transfer speeds than standard? It seems unlikely that ISPs would provide gigabyte ethernet routers with their package unless you opt for a more expensive package maybe?

It which case it seems unlikely ive ever had a router with these gigabyte ports. Therefore I Wouldnt see a decrease in speed to what iam accustomed to. You dont miss what you have never had scenario!

So you don't need a new router, unless you have an internet connection that is over 100Mbps or you use your router to transfer data between PC's.
