I have a dell vostdo laptop tha used to become very hot, I replaced the fan cleantd the heatsink aplyt thermal paste and now the harddisk reaches 47c when idle and dualcore cpu reaches about 50c idle and 75 under hours of load. is this the average temp or does it have to be brought down further? |

There are cooling pads for the Dell Vostro that are very cheap, try buying one.

its a bit warm when idle. I dont like hard disk going over 45 C. And the cpu i say 65 C. Is the max for continous operation.

maybe if it matters I'm running a completely stripped down ubuntu with most services removed exept for self compiled kernel and drivers specific for my machine. it boots in les than 3 seconds and cpu idles at 50c and under heavy load like 1080p. video encoding it reaches about 70 -75c

My fans fullspeed kicks in 49 c and rarely reaches 60 c as its like a hurricane

linux and ubuntu do not have any real control over cpu speed throttling so even when its supposed to be idle the cpu can still be screaming along with cooling fans maxed out. Ubuntu is best only used in an emergency to recover data of your boot hard disk when the system wont boot.

My laptop is a 1st gen i5 2.4ghz 2.66ghz turbo n can reach 84c on full load while gaming n 40c idle, had nO problems with it, got a cooling pad n lowered the temps by about 8c, got a cooler with a 2.5inch hdd bay so a nice extra 500gb storage
