I'm rebuilding a MSI 6368 ver 5 MOBO and came across an error I don't know? The MOBO boots fine and starts loading scandisk on windows 98 but only to a certain point and then the computer instantly powers down? No error messages or anything,pc just turns off? Scandisk never runs past 90 percent? Other times the pc just boots up,runs POST and mem check and same thing happens? HDD error? Mem error? Frequency error? Personally I would think HDD error, but some input will be appreciated thanx? Why |

Yeah sounds like a dodgey sector on the hdd! Download hdd rengenerator. Try to get an old free version if you can. It's comercial now but will fix a few for free. Well none really fix anything just recover and re-allocate the sector and update SMART properly!

yes it is,cpu temp constant between 38 and 42 degrees celsius, unless thermistor is lying, but I don't think? I've also changed HDD,so can't be that either? PC now also boots into win xp, but screen colours are all warped,so I changed mem as well, but no luck?

I'm confused! Win 98 or XP? If it boots fine into xp but the colours are wonkey it's probably a driver issue.. if it's Xp sp3 it's a world away from win 98 so issues will differ a lot! Why not get a new linux distro,(try mint xfce, bodhi,or puppy, they're small and fast) boot it up. If everything is fine it's just a compatability or driver issue with microsoft.

sori for the confusion lol. The first HDD that we thought had an error has win 98 loaded. I then changed HDD with anotha that has xp preloaded, hence the difference. I will try the linux and advise :-)

Ah! Windows 98 hdd was probably knackered! Hdd's aren't designed to last much longer than 3 or so years! Supprised a pre-installed xp drive worked at all as xp needs to install device drivers on every machine from the cd etc! It'll be device drivers that are wonky! You need to repair it with an original ;-) xp disc really! If you just use your computer for internet, office,cd burning etc just use linux. No viruses, free, installs on most hardware with everything you need. Zorin os is like xp. Mi

I know that yes....! Hence the reason I also tried to boot from win xp cd,to get to repair console or do fresh install, but didn't work either? Cd just loads to setup is starting windows, and plonk!!! dies again....:-(

ok, so the powerdown, enter bios, check HDDS master slave boot. goto advanced bios ( clocking section) check MM2 and the likes are default. now reboot and hit bios go into management and temps, let the system heat up and turn off, write down temps an check for a spike. now goto cpu peramiters and check the thermal overload is set correct from bios.

chips like the intel Q6600 has a Thermal shutdown at around 95w-105w, get the chips ID and check with maker for the Thermal shutdown number and check against bios. maybe even reflash bios back to an early version, see if its stable

thanx gents and especially psycho :-D I am currently running linux puppy and it is AWESUM!! but pc STILL powers down automatically! :-( I'm starting to think that thermal shutdown might be set at 45 or 50 degrees C as the pc only powers down when running intensive apps, but there is no setting in BIOS to change this? is it maybe pre included in the BIOS?
