Ive just purchased this USB modem from vodacom. I connected it to my computer, I logged into prodigits, googled a couple of sites, and about after 25 minutes or so of browsing, I used up 16mb of data. Thats only in one session of usage. Any idea how to minimize or lessen the amount of data transferred? (Instead of cutting down the amount of pages I go to) Thanks! |

iv noticed with my built in card in my laptop. On hsdpa it will work at like 900kbs but it only downloads at 150. So that 700 or so kbs gets wasted

@thar.s: when you're surfing the net on a PC, you get through a lot more data than you would browsing with your phone. Is 16MB in 25 minutes unusually high?

@two7four actual download speed is determined by deviding ur download speed by 8 so a 1mb connection would have a max actual download speed of 125kbs, 4mb - 500kbs etc only browsing uses the full speed on any given connection

Uh...browsing is downloading, because you are downloading the page off some server. And I don't think downloading speeds are determined by dividing by 8. Because I have 3600kbps modem, and it reached speeds of 1600kbps! (I 'downloaded a song')

16mb is normal for full browsing, its actually low, itd b alot higher if u browse high res sites and streaming media, if u wanna keep usage down avoid sites with high res pics and stay away from vid sites like youtube, i hope u didnt take the usb on a contract or pm arrangement, cheapest route is buying the modem loose or using ur phone and then buying a data bundle

Yep. Bought that 7.2mbps capable modem off. And I buy those R189 data bundles (500mb) I should probably get Telkoms ADSL?

Unfortunately, I cant reach speeds of 7.2mbps - only 3.6mbps. They said in around 3 months time, theyd have 7.2mbps coverage!

connection speed is measured in kilobits p/s while files are usually in kilobytes 1byte=8bits thus to determine actual download speed we devide the connection speed by 8, either ur mistaken or lying when u say u got 1.6mb p/s on a 3.6mb connection, thats simply not possible

No. I'm definitely not lying. Because right now, Im reaching speeds of over 450kbps (3600/8 = 450). The guy at Vodashop told me I'd reach speeds of about 2mbps (highest). And the software that came with the modem shows me my Upload and Download speed! When I downloaded a song, with Opera, both showed the speed to be 1.6mbps.
