It wont be a joke if it will be much cheaper than standalone BD players. In fact X360 already got all the hardware (procesor etc.) to run BD.

it would be because as usual microsoft skinped on the spec and only have HDMI 1.2. they will also have to take into account that bluray requires more processing power than HD DVD as its bitrates video and audio are typically higher. 360 would be stressed considerably. it would be very much a joke on the whole download system too. after saying for so long that they focus on downloads

they would instantly be ripping the heart out of their own download movie sales program, having a bluray drive would pretty much terminate a stream of income for their own movie service....

in america where the market would be heavily angled too, you would have a 299 elite which is already inferior on other spec to a 299 slim, and what? a 99 dollar add on? 129 dollars? so you are talking 400 dollars + for inferior bluray playback. microsoft reputation for expensive add on peripherals would continue to spiral out of control.

I see it this way - more is better. So download movies+blueray is not a bad thing. Ability to choose is always good.
