Part of the reason Portishead are so great is because they're unique, therefore it's difficult to offer 'sounds like' comparisons unlike all the landfill indie that's around. Morcheeba's first album 'Who Can You Trust' has similar trip-hop ambitions (although avoid their later material). Massive's 'Mezzanine' has a similar darkness to Portishead, and there's Beths solo album with Rustin Man.
