This is for noobs who own their first iphone and who is confused with terms like jailbreaking, unlock, cydia etc. This is for people who want to know how to restore to original firmware, how to sync using iTunes, how to install friendly i.e. crakd apps and games, how to update etc. Any further input by experts will be more helpfull for others.

1) *Unlock - Jailbreak* Most of the guys arent aware that these are two different things. Jailbreaking is the process of opening the phone up for installation of 3rd party apps. Unlocking is the process of allowing non-approved SIM cards to be used on your phone. If you have an approved provider, you only need to jailbreak your phone, not unlock your phone.

2) *Why Jailbreak?* Jailbreaking allows you to use the full potential of your iphone. Put it this way, eventhough iphone is one of the most powerful devices out apple imposes many restrictions on the apps that is allowed in appstore like patching system files such as SpringBoard, allowing apps to run in the background, no background processes etc.

This means that if you have an app, such as an instant messenger app, every time you press home to go to something else, the app is closed out. You are disconnected. You get no messages, no notification, nothing. By jailbreaking you can overcome this which you will learn later.

Most importantly Jailbreak allows you install cracked apps and games. Why pay for something if you can have it free?

3) *Restore - Upgrade* - iTunes provides two options to change the firmware on your phone. Restore and upgrade. Restore is a full erase and reprogramming of your device. This will result in a factory fresh device. All songs and contacts are wiped out.

Upgrade will only wipe out the smaller disk partition leaving all your songs and settings intact. Upgrade is only useful if you are trying to go from one version to the next version of firmware. It will not solve any problems on your phone unless they are naturally solved by the new firmware.

4) *How to update or restore?* When you connect your iphone to your pc itunes will automatically launh. or else launch it. now you can see iphone logo at the middle left portion of itunes. now click on the phone icon. on the next window under the summary tab you can see two options. check for update and restore. if you have an internet connection for your pc you can update staight away.

if you find your firmware buggy or you did anything wrong while jailbraking, you can restore to original firmware. either try what i said earlier or download firmwares from apple's servers. For other versions request here or use google.

Now after downloading the software with extension .ipsw open itunes, go to summary, click shift plus restore button to select the folder containing the downloaded fw. now it will restore. must take 30mins to hours depending on the phone and data size.

after restoring and rebooting a black screen appears asking you to connect to itunes to unlock iphone. INTERNET CONNECTION IS A MUST to unlock your phoneafter restoring

5) *How to backup - sync?* Simply conneut ur phone using usb. when itunes recognises your phone select sync button at bottom right corner. select app music or photos, define ditrectry - destination folder to be synced and click sync. If you download app or game from other source other than appstore, drag the .ipa extension app or game to itunes to get it installed or simply double click the file.

remember to tick the column near appname in itunes. if you want to delete an app just hold the icon in ur phone. after it starts moving press the small cross mark over the icon. or uncheck the app in itunes and sync. you can drag and drop icons from one homescreen to another using both.

Usually apps downloaded are saved at C - Users - **** - Music - iTunes - iTunes Media - Mobile Applications. assuming you installed itunes at c drive and **** being your pc username. you can copy the files to other destination if you want to backup.

6) *How to jailbeak?* The most simple way is using spirit. What's Spirit? Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2. Spirit is not a carrier unlock. If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit.

Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.) download it from the link I gave at start. Double click Spirit to launch it.
