i think there should be a few subgenres. death,for example justifies having a genre of its own,you don't hear in every metal song a tomb like grawling and grave like instruments lol power also is focused on epic battles,strength,usually with some choire and possibly operatic instruments. heavy distinguishes,well heavy theme like nightwish - bye bye beatyfull over classic metal like altaria - access denied. the rest,doom,epic,viking,core... i don't understand at all.

progressive its hard to explain and i heard very few of it. to me,it is the melody that slowly progresses around the same base. i think pharaoh is progressive. gothic describes bands like evanescence or within temptation. melodic is obvious,in flames - alias is the example. the good thing about subgenres is that it is all really metal in the end,but you can describe the melody and easily find more good music if you know which subgenres you stick around to. and you can combine them.

like melodic death metal,power death metal. symphonic,metal that features a theme found in classical music,nightwish is famous for that. so you can label bands this way and someone could easily find more music of his preference. the bad thing about subgenres,well there are a few actually. people are always arguing what is what. ac/dc is sometimes classified as heavy metal,so what to say more? lol ...and also,useless genres seam to be produced on daily basis.so it maybe starting to lose point.

I do agree with you to an extent, certainly stuff like death metal is deserving of its own sub genre but its just got a little silly and people tend to get all riled up about it.Its all just Metal at the end of the day
