A DEDICATED Tesco worker who had worked for the supermarket for 17 years killed himself after he was sacked for chasing a shoplifter, an inquest heard. Shaun Winstanley, 49, had been awarded for his Years of Outstanding Service but was fired for unreasonable behaviour after running after the thief. An inquest at Blackpool Town Hall heard the customer assistant had first begun to struggle after he was held at gunpoint during a robbery in May last year. Siobhan said her dad was offered five counselling sessions following the traumatic armed robbery in May last year but his mental health went downhill from there. However, he was not initially offered any time off work, said Siobhan, and was disciplined for missing three shifts following the crime. what a letdown by tesco and what a waste |

A very sad story indeed. Apparently Tesco said he put himself and the alleged shoplifter at risk of injury by chasing him. He also left a till unguarded.. A lesson here might be don't go chasing shoplifters. Don't put yourself at risk. Big companies don't give a fk about their employees. Still a sad state of affairs though. |

You can't even accuse people of stealing.. Let alone chase them out of the shop (if you are behind the counter etc). Like I said, security is there to do that job.

@ slwnoris - 13.08.19 - 09:52am Security guards have no rights to stop detain or search bags or your person, they have the same rights as any member of the public, that of citizens arrest, a security guard must see you steal something. If you get stopped in any store if you not taken anything simply say nothing and keep walking, if they then grab you they have committed an assault, if they then hold you against your will that is false imprisonment. You are now in your right to call the police and they must attend. Once the police officers arrive let them search your bag and yourself, then when nothing is found, then ask the police officers to arrest the security guard for assault the police officers are duty-bound to investigate, using the cctv and any witness statements, also remember if any of the store employees grabbed you they to are guilty of assault. Incorrect. |

The last 20yrs has been a soft-touch approach and emo attitudes. Crime happened before, but this isn't crime. Just entitled millenial chimpanzees in action. They know nobody will touch them. The guy recording did it for his YouTube channel, there's a full length version. Notice how the only people in the store who tried to stop them were people of the older generations..? Yeah, we're fkd. Relax. They'll stab each other to death anyway. |

@ slwnoris - 13.08.19 - 10:30am To sum up, a security guard MUST have seen you place an item in a bag, pocket or about your person or have cctv clearly showing theft and you leaving the store. They only have the right of citizens arrest, if they claim they have the same legal rights of that of a police officer they are lying. Any security guard must be prepared to stand up in a court of law to justify his or her actions Nope. |

I'm trying to imagine a similar thing happening here now and there's no way they would make it out of the shop. We're probably just behind the cultural curve and will get similar things in the next 20 years. |

@ slwnoris - 13.08.19 - 11:14am Whatever, me thinks we have a security guard here, one last thing, Mr Mark Holt took legal advice after a security guard from the Carlisle security, thought he was a policeman, he won a 5 figure sum from said company for 1 unlawful arrest and 2 assault, security guards need to join the police force and under go there training, until then........ Carry on living the dream of being a real police man. By the way solicitors know best. it takes years of study to become a solicitor and they have to continue to study the law to be accredited to continue in practice, I wonder how must training a security guard has to go through? You can become a copper in a few weeks soooo... |
