Oh boy, this is serious... N I don't think most people realize how this one might play out long term... In South Africa roughly 40 of people are indirectly employed by the government including Transnet staff... Currently the wage increase offer on the table is 2 percent below inflation... Everyone is up in arms because of the strike by workers at Transnet claiming it's selfish to impact the economy etc... Here's the crazy thing nobody seems to realize though... Whatever the workers settle for will set the level for everyone else... So looks like South Africa will be interesting to watch from outside in the next few years when everyone who demands the striking workers suck it up and get back to work get stuck with below inflation pay rates... |

Everyone's getting below-inflation pay rises, the world over. Some people are stamping their feet, some people are getting on with it.

True that one, just thinking this might be the beginning of the end of South Africa... People here get ticked off pretty easily and if they do another round of looting combined with national shutdowns of various sectors, we're screwed... So not before next election since the government wants to stay in power which means come 2024 there's gonna be fireworks...

Doubt it. I haven't heard any yet, and bonfire night's only a fortnight away. People can't really afford them atm.

They're gonna move the Falklands there, with a bridge to Antarctica. It'll stop the Argies moaning, and give them a place to cool down in the summer.

@ eyesore - 18.10.22 - 08:16pm End of SA ? What will replace it .? At a guess between 4 and 6 smaller countries made of provinces that share the most in common... What you think about independent WC n GP? |

GP can never be independent without KZN and that's not happening. A low level civil war is more likely.

Looks like you might be right, PSA now going to strike, govt trying to offer them 3 which is 5 below current inflation rate... If they are wanting inflation based increase and they are successful Transnet workers will be pissed off to say the least I rate ..

They should just wait them out. Striking workers aren't very smart to begin with. It will take years for them recover all the lost wages even with an increment higher than their demands.

I'm hoping they get something reasonable otherwise within a year or two it's going to happen yet again and with more rage, anger xenophobic attacks etc... Just wondering once they expell all the illegals who they gonna blame |

OK well looks like a decent amount of public servants aren't going to be too pleased with their 3 wage increases, so looks like strike season will be festive this year... Or early next year if they wait it out... |

Poverty has very little to do with the violent crime here. There are countries worse off than us that don't have our violent crime rate. Especially when you look at the sadism involved in individual crimes. Poverty is a scapegoat that prevents discussion of the real root of it.

Very true, in fact during the looting that occurred previously they ransacked and damaged several shops in our local shopping mall, clothing, alcohol and shoes where the first to be emptied... Oddly enough nobody bothered with the food shops, Checkers was untouched? Do you honestly think that the looters where living in poverty?
