is a fair question. as im sure I would be a little concerned about a adults state of mind if they believed in santa. but if we look at why a child believes in santa we can see that its not that different from an adult belief in God. both are not knowledgeable of there surrounding. both have had people they feel they can trust tell them its true. and both want to believe.

Question, let's say you are right, that with our knowledge today, of science and the world a person is mentally ill for believing in God. Let's say you're right. Lets go 7 thousand years into the past, and you are a half naked hunter gatherer and lightening seems more like magic than anything natural, you see strange objects in the sky, the moon, you can't wrap your head around any of it, it all seems supernatural. Is an atheist in such a world mentally ill?

Key difference is a child is a child and I don't expect of a child what I expect from an adult. The kid gets a pass until they mature into an adult, adults shouldn't need a pass.

Another way of looking at it is adults get privileges that kids don't. Like voting, or being authority figures in government, having the ability to affect many lives beyond their own.
